Hobart is Tasmania’s capital city. It is located at the entrance to the Derwent River. It offers picturesque waterways, rugged mountains, gourmet restaurants and hearty pubs. There are many tourist attractions and interesting activities to try. When visiting you may wonder what to do Hobart. Consider hiring a car and taking a day trip to one of Tasmania’s beautiful sites. Places to visit in Hobart include:

Tamar Valley. Take a drive and explore the Tamar River from Launceston to Bass Strait, as it moves through vineyard country. You will see orchards, scenic pastures and even forests. Drive east to Narawntapu National Park. From the park you can enjoy panoramic views of Badger Head and Bass Strait.

Take a drive through Tamar Valley to Hillwood Berry Farm. You can pick berries, get some jam, quince, liqueur or wine. You may be interested in their beauty products as well.

Visit Native Point or Three Wishes Vineyard. There are over 30 vineyards on the Tamar Valley Wine Route. Next you can travel to George Town. Take pictures from Mount George Lookout. You may want to take a tour of the Old Watch House Museum, the former local lockup. It is now a craft shop.

Next drive to Low Head, and visit Australia’s oldest continuously operated Pilot Station. You will see the Maritime Museum, Low Head Lighthouse, and Light Head Fog Horn. At Lagoon Bay and East Beach you can enjoy beautiful beaches. Finally, stop back in George Town and have dinner at York Cove. The restaurant overlooks the Tamar.

Heritage Highway traces the route between Launceston and Hobart, built by convict road gangs in the early 1800s. Enjoy the rolling farmlands, Georgian villages and historic pastoral properties. Picnic on the banks of the South Esk or have lunch in Longford. Many of the houses here were also built by convicts. Two World Heritage Convict sites are here: Brickendon and Woolmers Estate. Brickendon is a working farm, while Woolmers Estate is home to the National Rose Garden.

Next visit Campbell Town. There are over 100 homes that are over 100 years old. Take a walk by the Elizabeth River and see its Red Bridge, built in 1838. Continue following the brick trail through the heart of town.

Another attraction in Hobart is the Huon Trail. This is where you will discover a region of waterways and wilderness. They also have vast forests, orchards and vineyards. The area is known for its variety of landscapes, including the tranquil Huon River and the forests of Hartz Mountains National Park.

Take a jet boat ride on the Huon River and see the beautiful landscape from the water. Enjoy some of the produce from the area at Home Hill Winery Restaurant. You can enjoy salmon, oysters, trout, lamb, fruits and vegetable from the region.

After enjoying a day trip through the countryside or exploring one of the local vineyards, enjoy some of the best food in Hobart. Enjoy cheerful local pubs to high end restaurants. They all serve local produce so you are sure to get the freshest meal possible.
